From Student to Teacher: She Came Back

Padmai Ga-Tshal Choiling Teaching Team

She was six years old when her parents carried her over three mountain passes to the gates of Padmai Ga-Tshal Choiling School. She barely remembers the details now β€” only that her mother knelt down, held her tightly for a long moment, then turned and walked away without looking back.

"I didn't understand it then. I thought my mother didn't want me anymore," she says. "It was only later that I understood β€” that was the deepest love she had to give me."

Over twelve years at the school, she grew from a shy little girl into a big sister who looks after children younger than herself. Teachers taught her to read and write, taught her traditional Tibetan dance, and taught her how to hold onto gratitude even in hardship.

"I remember how much it hurt to wash my hands in winter as a child β€” like being cut by ice. But I also remember a teacher wrapping her own coat around us on a cold night."

She once wrote a wish in her notebook: "One day I'll come back, become a teacher, and make this school better." That wish has now come true. Last year, after completing her teacher training, she chose to return to Padmai Ga-Tshal Choiling as a full-time teacher.

"The children here remind me of who I used to be. I want them to know β€” if someone is willing to wait for you, no mountain is too high to cross; if you're willing to work hard, no dream is too far to reach."

She is one of 700 children who found her way from student to teacher. And her story is quietly planting the same seed in the hearts of many children still to come.
